AfriSam has indicated that its cement operations in the Northern Cape have been closed and placed under care and maintenance for the lockdown period. 

In response to calls from Cosatu for all mines to close production to fight Covid-19,  AfriSam’s head of communications, Maxine Nel, said that the company had prioritised the health and safety of its employees and took business entities with whom they interacted, “extremely seriously”. 

“In line with the directive of the President, we have complied fully with the directives and guidelines provided by the national government in relation to Covid-19.” 

She indicated that all the company’s cement plants, aggregate quarries and readymix concrete operations were also affected by the lockdown, in order to “safeguard the nation”.

“During this period, our administrative and sales staff are working remotely.”
