RAPE accused, Aobakwe Johnny, 26, is expected to return to court next week for a formal bail application.

He was arrested on March 10, on charges of raping an eight-year-old girl, after the incident was reported by the girl’s aunt.

Johnny made a brief appearance in the Jan Kempdorp Magistrate’s court on Tuesday, where he indicated that he wanted to apply for bail.

He will remain in custody until his next court appearance.

Johnny has since appointed a legal representative from Legal Aid South Africa.

Community members who are outraged over the incident, gathered outside the court.

National prosecuting authority regional spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, said the state would oppose bail.

The matter was postponed until May 9.
