THE POLICE are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving following an accident involving two vehicles on the N12 outside Modderrivier on Wednesday afternoon.

Upon arrival at the scene, the police found an Eskom bakkie lying on its side in the middle of the road, while a VW Kombi was standing on the side of the road.

It is alleged that the vehicles collided when the Eskom bakkie attempted to turn onto the N12 from a nearby sub-station while the Kombi was heading in the opposite direction

Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said no fatalities were reported and that the injured occupants of the vehicles were transported to hospitals in Kimberley.

Tawana added that the number of injured persons was not yet confirmed.

Mediclinic Gariep Hospital confirmed that six people were transported to its facility.

Four of the patients were apparently travelling in the Kombi, while two were travelling in the Eskom bakkie.

It is believed that some of the passengers in the Kombi were freed from the wreckage with the use of the Jaws of Life.
