50 000 food parcels distributed in NC

JUST over 50 000 food parcels have been distributed in the Northern Cape since the beginning of the lockdown to indigent persons and those whose income was affected by Covid-19.

The Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu, said that a total of 51 086 parcels were distributed in the Province from March to the end of June.

A total of 244 430 people in the Province benefited from the distribution of the parcels.

Nationally the programme has distributed 800 968 food parcels to benefit about 4 004 840 persons.

According to a breakdown provided by the minister, food parcels were only distributed in two provinces, Gauteng and the Western Cape, during March.

In April, a total of 25 554 parcels were distributed in the Northern Cape, benefiting 127 770 people, while in May 24 672 parcels were distributed, benefiting 123 360 people.

In June, the number of food parcels distributed in the Northern Cape dropped to 860, with 4 300 people benefiting.

Zulu confirmed that her department was still issuing food parcels to indigent persons and those whose income was affected by the coronavirus.
