A TOTAL of 32 candidates have registered for the by-elections that will be held on February 13 in seven wards in the Sol Plaatje municipal district.

Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) provincial electoral officer Bonolo Modise said yesterday that candidates from the ANC, DA, EFF, and African Transformation Movement as well as nine independent candidates had registered to contest the by-elections.

“The registration process went smoothly. Once the names have been confirmed, we will commence with the printing of ballot papers,” said Modise.

He added that IEC staff who were trained for this weekend’s final registration weekend ahead of this year’s national general elections would oversee the February 13 by-elections.

“First-time voters as well as registered voters who wish to confirm their details as well as those who have changed residential addresses are encouraged to update their details during the registration weekend.

“Registered voters can check their registration status on the IEC website and update their details online. First-time voters will have to visit the voting stations where they reside to register and bring along a green bar-coded identity document, smart card or temporary identity document that can be obtained from the Department of Home Affairs. No proof of residence is needed.”

Modise said that passports and driving licences would not be accepted as a form of identification at the voting stations.

The Department of Home Affairs’ offices will be open this weekend to assist with services as well as the final registration weekend.

The provincial manager at the Department of Home Affairs, Abednego Mvula, said the offices would be open from 8am until 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

“If there are long queues at the voting stations this weekend they will also remain open.”

He added that all offices would be open for the application for temporary identity documents and collection of documents.

“The public is also welcome to access any other services provided, including the processing of birth registration and applications for passports, this weekend.”
