A KURUMAN Regional Court has sentenced 38-year-old Bakang Baepi to 10 years’ direct imprisonment for attempted murder following a brutal attack on his girlfriend. The sentence was handed down on Wednesday, January 7.

The court heard that on Saturday, May 25, 2024, the 42-year-old victim was visiting Baepi at his residence in Laxey Village when an argument between the couple escalated into a physical confrontation.

During the altercation, Baepi stabbed the victim multiple times with a sharp object.

The woman managed to escape and sought help from a neighbour. The incident was reported to Tsineng SAPS, and Baepi was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Detective Sergeant Khumoetsile Setlhauno led the investigation. His thorough work ensured that Baepi was successfully convicted. In addition to his prison sentence, the accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The Acting District Commissioner of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, commended Detective Sergeant Setlhauno for his dedication. “Justice was served and a perpetrator of gender-based violence received an appropriate sentence,” he said.
