THE MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), Bentley Vass, recently handed over 10 houses and title deeds to beneficiaries of the Jacksonville 139 Housing Project near Roodepan.
The Jacksonville project forms part of the R1 billion Housing Project launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Northern Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul in January 2024.
Vass was accompanied by the speaker of Sol Plaatje Municipality, Dipuo Peters; the speaker of Frances Baard District Municipality, Keamogetse Mothibi; and councillors from both municipalities for the handover on September 8.
Vass said trees were also planted at the new houses.
“This was to signify a new beginning for many of the beneficiaries and their families,” he explained. “The department handed over completed houses to avoid damage and vandalism and to ensure security and comfort for beneficiaries. Construction work is continuing on the remaining houses.”
He added that the title deed provides legal ownership of the property.
“It can also be used as leverage for other economic benefits. The department, working with all municipalities in the province, will be stepping up efforts to deliver available title deeds throughout the province.
“The title deeds restoration programme will ensure that the government reaches out to the communities and housing beneficiaries to dispatch title deeds accordingly,” said Vass.
