Residents have petitioned for a ban on face masks in Ward 16 after a 17-year-old was allegedly killed by suspects who concealed their identities.
Ward 16 councillor Casper Rammutle stated that the deceased was fatally stabbed by unknown suspects near a tavern in Snake Park on August 17.
“We call for a prohibition on wearing masks in our ward as criminals are using them to disguise themselves," Rammutle said.
He also urged the closure of unlicensed shebeens and illegal taverns that were attracting criminal elements in the area.
“Our petition will be handed to the SAPS and Public Protector. We request higher police visibility and regular patrols in the neighbourhood. We have advised parents to ensure that their children stay out of the dark streets at night.”
Rammutle commended the community for not resorting to taking the law into their own hands.
"I stood with residents in the cold during the early morning hours to assist in locating the family of the deceased. May his soul rest in peace.”
SAPS Northern Cape spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock said the Kagisho SAPS Serious and Violent Crimes unit was investigating the murder of a 17-year-old.
“It is alleged that the deceased and two male friends were on their way home from Snake Park in Phutanang to Promise Land on Sunday, August 17, at about 2.30am.
“They were reportedly accosted by three men who stabbed the boy once in the chest, and he died on the scene.”
He added that a 23-year-old man was arrested at his house in Promise Land on Monday, August 18, at about 8.10am.
“The investigation continues. Anyone with information can contact Detective Sergeant Dineo Motseothata on 066 170 9705 or contact the Saps Crime Stop number 08600 10111. All information will be treated confidentially,” he said.
