A 55-year-old Galeshewe man, Boitumelo Simon Mokomela, has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of raping a 26-year-old woman.
The Galeshewe Regional Court handed down the sentence on August 5 2025, following Mokomela’s conviction for sexually assaulting the victim while she was asleep at her boyfriend’s home.
According to court testimony, the woman woke up to find Mokomela – her boyfriend’s uncle – raping her. She immediately informed her boyfriend, and the matter was reported to police. Mokomela was arrested shortly afterwards.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered that Mokomela's name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders, and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Charlotte Makgari, praised Detective Warrant Officer Tanya Serfontein for her dedication and professionalism in ensuring justice for the victim.
This sentence serves as a significant step in the fight against gender-based violence, reinforcing the message that such crimes will not be tolerated.
The National Prosecuting Authority's efforts to hold perpetrators accountable and protect victims' rights are evident in this case.
