Public urged to excerise caution as heavy rains disrupt road conditions in Northern Cape

Heavy rainfall in the Northern Cape has rendered several key routes hazardous, prompting the Department of Roads and Public Works to urge motorists to exercise extreme caution.

The Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works is warning motorists and visitors to exercise extreme caution due to sustained and heavy rainfall impacting several key routes across the Namaqua and Frances Baard Districts.

Gravel roads and regional routes have become dangerously wet and slippery, increasing the risk of accidents.

High-risk routes in Namaqua district:

  • Kamieskroon Road (DR2951): Known locally as the "Op die Berg" Road, this route has been flagged as particularly hazardous.
  • Khuboes Road (DR3247/3246): Motorists are advised to approach with utmost caution.

Affected roads in Frances Baard district:

  • MR811: Douglas to Schmidtsdrift
  • DR3355: Olifantshoek to Schmidtsdrift
  • DR3354: Vaalharts
  • MR802: Witpit
  • MR910: Schmidtsdrift to Papkuil

Griekwastad Area:

  • TR69/2: Griekwastad to Nikershoop
  • DR3041: Griekwastad to Limpit
  • MR809: Griekwastad to Douglas
  • DR3379: Lime Acres to Silverstream

The Department has started installing warning signage on hazardous sections to ensure road user safety. Weather forecasts predict that rainfall in the Namaqua District will subside by 2am on Thursday.
