A 19-year-old accused has been sentenced to 11 years imprisonment for the rape, sexual assault and assault of a 17-year-old girl.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the girl was on her way to the local spaza shop, after her mother sent her to buy electricity on January 18 2020.
“While she was on her way in Rondomskrik at about 8.40pm, she was accosted by the accused who forcefully dragged her to an open veld and raped her. The accused was arrested the following day.”
He said the investigating official Sergeant Thabisho Mashililishili successfully opposed his bail.
“The accused remained in custody until the conclusion of the case. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name recorded in the sexual offences register.”
Masegela added that the accused, Juvani Jantjies, 19, was sentenced to 13 years, of which two years were suspended, in the Upington Regional Court on July 27 on charges of rape, sexual assault and assault.
The unit commander of the Upington Family Child and Sexual Offences Unit, Captain Koos van den Heever commended the investigating officer for his dedication and commitment in this case.
