THE WEEKLY high-density, multi-disciplinary operation, Operation Shanela, continues to combat crime across the Northern Cape, with a strong focus on reducing contact and violent crimes in identified hot spots.

From January 20 to January 26, the operation demonstrated its effectiveness by resulting in 186 arrests, showcasing a determined effort to uphold safety and security in the Province.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock reported that the operation included 9,900 actions and police activities, ranging from vehicle checkpoints (VCPs), stop-and-search operations, foot and vehicle patrols, to compliance inspections. These efforts also targeted the smuggling of drugs and other illicit commodities.

Numerous checkpoints and roadblocks were conducted across the Province, during which 1,929 vehicles and 4,623 individuals were stopped and searched. Inspections were carried out at second-hand dealers, scrapyards, recyclers, private security companies, firearm dealers, formal and informal businesses, farms, and mines, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

As part of the initiative, schools were randomly visited in collaboration with Safer Schools representatives from the Education Department and the SAPS. These proactive and disruptive actions aimed to promote safety and awareness among learners.

The operation’s successes included the arrest of suspects for crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, malicious damage to property, drug-related offences, driving under the influence, and immigration violations. Wanted individuals were also apprehended.

In addition, large volumes of alcohol, drugs, non-ferrous metal items, and cash believed to be proceeds of criminal activities were confiscated during the operation.

The provincial commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, attributed the operation’s success to the collaborative efforts of stakeholders and the active involvement of the community. She emphasised the importance of collective action in dismantling criminal activities.

Lieutenant-General Otola encouraged the public to participate in the “Rate Our Service” online survey to provide feedback on the police’s efforts in combating contact crimes. This initiative aims to further enhance the quality of service delivery and strengthen trust between law enforcement and the community.
