Durban – The body of a 14-year-old boy who went missing while swimming at a KwaZulu-Natal beach on December 23, has been found.

On Thursday, the youngster was reportedly swimming at a non-bathing beach at Zinkwazi on the KZN north coast when he got into difficulty.

The boy was reported missing after a friend who was swimming with him managed to alert security services. The boy is believed to have experienced difficulties in strong currents.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Paul Herbst, said extensive aerial searches were conducting early in the mornings following the teen’s disappearance.

“IPSS aquatic team together with KwaDukuza Municipality lifeguards, NSRI and SAPS Search and Rescue used boats, water crafts, all terrain vehicles and a drone to search for the youngster,” Herbst said.

“The deceased was located on the beach, approximately 1km north of where he went swimming. The search continued this morning making use of the Lenmed Ethekweni heart hospitals beach patrol helicopter as well as using all terrain vehicles. The body of the young boy was discovered by Kwadakuza lifeguards whilst on foot-patrol. Our thoughts are with the family during this time,” he said.
