14 arrested after cops disperse crowd of young people caught drinking in public

FOURTEEN suspects were arrested by members of the Public Order Police in Postmasburg on charges of malicious damage to state property, incitement to public violence and contravention of the National Disaster Management.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba said the police intervened when 300 young people were drinking in public in Postmasburg on December 31 at about 10pm.

“The police were pelted with stones and beer bottles, while damages to the value of R250 000 was caused to police vehicles. This led to the arrest of 12 males and two female suspects between the ages of 19 and 35 years.”

He said the suspects were expected to appear before the Postmasburg Magistrates Court soon.

“Police investigations are continuing.”

The acting provincial commissioner, Major-General Henriette de Waal warned that any defaulters who refused to comply with the National Disaster Management Act regulations would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
