Safe journeys start with a checklist – protect your family on the road this holiday season

As South African families gear up for their annual festive‑season road trips, road‑safety experts are urging drivers to make vehicle checks a priority. 

With rising travel costs pushing more households onto the highways, a simple pre‑trip inspection could mean the difference between a safe arrival and a life‑changing incident, according to Ashley Reddy, head of Aftersales and Dealer Network Management at Audi South Africa.

“Many road users underestimate how small issues, such as worn tyres or low brake fluid, can snowball into serious dangers at high speed. A 20‑minute check before a trip could be the difference between a safe arrival and a life‑changing incident,” Reddy said.

Key vehicle checks for long drives

Tyres and brakes – Ensure adequate tread depth and correct pressure; inspect brake pads for wear.

Lights and wipers – Test headlights, brake lights, indicators and wipers for optimal visibility.

Fluids – Verify engine oil, coolant and windscreen‑washer levels.

Spare equipment – Confirm the spare wheel, jack and tools are in good condition.

Markus Schuster, Head of Audi South Africa, added that planning a journey was not only about the route and destination but also about ensuring your vehicle is prepared to get you there safely.

"During the festive season, when road traffic is at its peak, being proactive about safety is a civic duty as much as it is personal care,” he said. 

Beyond the vehicle: road‑safety habits

Vehicle checks are only part of the equation. Drivers are reminded to:

• Stick to speed limits and adjust for weather conditions.
• Rest every two hours to avoid fatigue.
• Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Share the road responsibly with cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.
