Various activities in the city to celebrate Heritage Day
Kimberley and Northern Cape residents are set to come together this weekend to share, celebrate and showcase their cultural heritage and a number of events have been organised in the city and the province.
The Sol Plaatje University will host a public lecture to honour a South African War (previously Anglo-Boer War) hero, Kgosi Mathakgong Kepadisa. The lecture will be delivered by Dr Brian Willan, under the theme “Retrieving A Lost Past: Mathakgong Kepadisa, Sol Plaatje and the Siege of Mahikeng”.
The lecture will take place tomorrow at the SPU Central Campus at 6.30pm for 7pm. Kepadisa led the Matsetse Regiment of Barolong men, who were tasked with repulsing Boer forces, and recovering cattle and food, behind their lines during the Siege of Mahikeng, which took place from October 13 1899 to May 17 1900.
A Heritage Day event will also be held in Delportshoop tomorrow by The Pride of Ubuntu. The organisation will be hosting a Johannesburg PACD Marimba team, which will perform and entertain locals, along with a number of local artists. The event will take place at the Tsholofelo Community Hall from 11am until 6pm.
The local military units in Kimberley, together with the SAPS, Correctional Services, Traffic Department, Department Social Development, Department Rural Development and Land Reform, Department of Labour and Cancer Vive will celebrate Heritage Day a traditional healthy lifestyle format.
The programme kicks off this morning with presentations on a Healthy Lifestyle, followed with a 2km walk led out by the motorcyclists of Cancer Vive and SABC Morning Live.
This will be followed by a “Traditional Fashion Parade” where the various department employees will parade their traditional cultural attire on the catwalk, representing each of the 13 national culture in South Africa.
The day will end with a braai, in celebration of National Braai Day.
