“The silence and brutal force of the elements”

A RADIO programme featuring the “all-consuming silence” of a walk along the coast of Greenland, is among the BBC’s audio highlights this Christmas.

The Radio 3 show, Greenland – An Arctic Sound Walk, is an example of “slow radio” which helps listeners detach themselves from “today’s frenzied world” with more restful content.

It will follow a walk along the west coast of the world’s biggest island. Author Horatio Clare will hike through the “vast emptiness”, experiencing “the silence and brutal force of the elements”.

The BBC said: “We pick out the beating of ravens’ wings, the crackle of frozen streams, the screaming winds and the sudden all-consuming silence when everything stands still.”

It said the three-part programme, which starts on Christmas Eve, would bring to life “Greenland’s dramatic colours”with music that captures the “ever-changing atmospheres”.

The BBC will also air a special festive edition of its Gemma Collins podcast, featuring “some Christmas classics” on BBC Sounds. Dame Darcey Bussell will appear on Private Passions on Radio 3 to talk about the toll dancing has taken on her feet.

Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy returns to 6 Music to play some “tender radio for tender heads” on New Year’s Day.
