Egypt’s Benban solar energy park, located in the Aswan Desert and funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), is complete and operational and will now be able to provide renewable energy for approximately one million homes – making it one of the world’s largest solar parks.

According to EBRD it decided to finance Benban, which extends over 37 square kilometres and will generate 1.5 GW, after an agreement to support the roll-out of renewable energy in Egypt in 2017 within an approved $500 million framework New Europe reported.

EBRD is the project’s largest financier, having supported 16 of the 32 plots, all of which are now connected to the national grid.

This project is supported by the Green Climate Fund, the European Union and the donors to the SEMED MDA (Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Taipei China and the United Kingdom).
