ON FREEDOM Day on Monday the ANC in the Northern Cape recommitted itself to caring for the poor during the national lockdown, through social and economic relief programmes.
This is as the Northern Cape recorded its 17th confirmed Covid-19 case on Sunday, when a farmer in the ZF Mgcawu District tested positive.
ANC provincial secretary Deshi Ngxanga urged the public to adhere to Covid-19 regulations by cleaning their hands with alcohol-based sanitisers, staying at home and making use of gloves and masks when going out.
Ngxanaga welcomed the arrival of 217 Cuban medical experts who landed in the country on Monday to assist in fighting the coronavirus outbreak.
“We should pray and continue to salute our health care workers and other essential services workers for their bravery and fortitude in fighting this deadly pandemic.”
Ngxanga pointed out that there are still many challenges that have to be overcome in the Northern Cape, despite the “significant strides” that have been made to improve the quality of life in the Province – including in the areas of health care, education and social services.
“We are encouraged by the commitment made by President Cyril Ramaphosa to firmly support the poorest of the poor through social and economic relief as part of the national response to the Covid-19 pandemic. We are confident that these responses will reach all those who deserve to benefit. We know that this (lockdown) will impact badly on our economy. We will need to work hard to avoid job losses and other key strategic components.”
