THE NORTHERN Cape police have welcomed the life sentence handed down to Kgotsietsile Mokomele, 27, for double rape by the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court on July 7.

The sentence was secured through DNA links to both rape cases.

Mokomele was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the first rape and received a life sentence for the second rape.

The first incident took place on December 21, 2014, where a 16-year-old girl from Bothitong, Kuruman, informed her mother that she was raped by an unknown man.

The accused accosted his second victim, a 14-year-old girl on December 31, 2014, when he jumped out of a taxi, hit her with a bottle in the face and raped her.

The friends who were with the victim during the New Year’s Eve celebrations fled on foot in different directions.

Investigations through a forensic DNA lead linked Mokomele to both the rapes.

He was arrested and found guilty on both offences.

The acting provincial commander for the Serial and Electronic Crimes Investigation unit, Lieutenant-Colonel Marli Strydom, applauded Detective Sergeant Tokkie van Rensburg for her “meticulous investigations and assertiveness in court” that led to the double rape sentence.
