A DISTRAUGHT Roodepan mother, Elizabeth Jones, is looking for her daughter, Charnice Jones, 26, whom she last saw on January 26.
Charnice disappeared after she apparently “snuck out” of the family home in the middle of the night.
Her three-year-old daughter was found sleeping alone in bed.
Elizabeth said her daughter had moved in with her for four months after growing up under her grandmother’s care in Verwoerd Park, Kimberley.
According to Elizabeth, her daughter “has a habit of keeping bad company due to substance abuse”.
“After starting to search for her we learned that she went to one of her aunt’s homes and she has since disappeared.
“We got tired of following false leads from people who claim to have seen her.
“Some said they spotted her somewhere in Galeshewe with a Nigerian national.”
Elizabeth said her daughter “has a tendency to disappear” but has never been gone for such a long time.
She said she reported her missing at the Roodepan police station on February 11 after initially “being in denial”.
That is also when the family prepared themselves for the “worst-case scenario” and started searching at hospitals and mortuaries.
“The strangest and scariest thing happened the next day after we went to the police. As Charnice’s older brother was preparing to go to the mortuary he received a new Facebook friend request from Charnice. But it seemed like a newly created account. The sender was assuring us that she is OK and will come back home soon,” said the mother, who was close to tears.
The distraught mother expressed how tough it is not knowing where her daughter is.
“My granddaughter and I have not been doing well due to this. I have been undergoing counselling and was put on antidepressants this month. I have lost weight – from 110kg to 87.
“It is more shattering because she is turning 27 this month and her daughter is turning four years old.
“Her daughter is also struggling to cope with the disappearance and always runs to her mother’s room calling her name.
“We visited my mother a few months ago and my grandchild ran to what used to be her mother’s bedroom and expected to find her there.
“We met her mother’s friend in town the other day and she asked that lady to pick her up. She hugged that lady tightly for a very long time.”
