DURBAN: A 21-year-old man was caught-red handed, while digging up a stolen safe, containing firearms, that he had buried in the Dulini area, under the Mahlabathini policing precinct in Zululand, on Sunday.

In a statement on Sunday, provincial police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said police were following up on information regarding firearms that were stolen at the Dayeni area, in Nongoma, in a multi-disciplinary operation on Sunday morning.

Gwala said the complainant alleged that on May 22, 2021, just after 6am, he noticed that his house had been broken into and a safe containing firearms was stolen.

She said a case of burglary was opened for investigation at Nongoma SAPS.

Acting on information regarding the burglary, the multi-disciplinary team went to Dulini area, where they discovered the suspect in the bushes.

“During the operation, the suspect was found digging up a safe with firearms that was hidden in the bushes. A 21-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for possession of illegal firearms and ammunition,” said Gwala.

Gwala said the suspect was found in possession of a revolver and rifle. A total of 177 rounds of ammunition were found with the suspect.

In a separate case, the team proceeded to another homestead in Dayeni, where five suspects, aged between 32 and 42, were placed under arrest for burglary and theft.

All the suspects will appear before the Nongoma and Mahlabathini Magistrates’ Courts on Monday.
